Ross started out his days as a Mini with the Wee Reds at Linlithgow before going to secondary school at Stewarts Melville College where he played in the Bell Lawrie Cup winning team of 2006.
He played with Stewarts Melville FP in Premiership Two before moving to South Africa after gaining a place at the Rugby Legends Academy where former Scotland and Springbok hooker John Allan is CEO. He played at Currie Cup level with Border Bulldogs before returning to the UK to play for Rotherham in the Championship.
He moved to Ayr at the start of the 2011/2012 season.
His brother is the elite development player Michael Doneghan.
