November 05, 2005Glasgow Warriors 30 - 15 ConnachtCeltic League match played at Hughenden on Friday November 4th 2005 | No comments
Graydon Staniforth was a stand out for Glasgow Warriors Glasgow kick-started their Celtic League campaign by snuffing out the challenge of Connacht at Hughenden - but they will be frustrated to have missed out on a crucial bonus point. Hugh Campbell's troops may have won, but the coach was left frustrated over their lack of killer instinct. Despite earning the vast bulk of territory and possession they could only earn three tries and had to withstand a late rally from the basement boys. The Warriors had made a rousing start, pinning the visitors back inside their own danger zone during the initial exchanges. And it was no surprise when they broke the deadlock with an angled penalty by Colin Gregor after the Connacht backline crept offside while under pressure. Gregor was making his first competitive start of the campaign and after the disastrous kicking display by first-choice stand-off Dan Parks against Leinster the previous weekend, his instant success was an obvious confidence boost to the Scots. Glasgow kept up the momentum and stretched their advantage with another Gregor strike following a deliberate knock-on. Connacht then created their first meaningful attack in reply, with Paul Warwick clawing back three points thanks to an accurate 35-metre penalty for a front-row offence. The kick was, however, the cue for the Warriors to storm back up field to manufacture a superb try. Warwick had set the province back on their heels by thumping a 22-metre drop-out straight into touch. From the scrum, number eight Johnny Beattie scooped up the ball from the base and freed stand-in skipper Graeme Beveridge, whose pass was perfectly delivered for full-back Graydon Staniforth to romp in under the crossbar to give Gregor a formality of a conversion. Glasgow kept up the pace , but a combination of desperate defending and careless hands prevented them from adding to their lead until Gregor completed his first-half treble with a 40-metre thump on the stroke of the interval. There was still time for the home players to receive a further bonus when Warwick fired a penalty wide of the near post. Glasgow again looked the hungrier outfit after the restart and they went within inches of bagging a second touchdown when Colin Shaw narrowly failed to win the race to the ball after Gregor's clever chip towards the line. Play became disjointed with both teams trying to over-complicate their approach but it was the Warriors who settled quickest to effectively put the match out of reach. A well-controlled pack surge enabled lock Dan Turner to reach the target at full-stretch, with Gregor gleefully maintaining his 100% record with the boot as he expanded the lead to 20. But Connacht were not completely killed off and less than five minutes later they sneaked in for a touchdown from Andy Farley, goaled by Warwick. Gregor burst back into the limelight to convert his own try under the crossbar in the wake of a breakout from the home 22-area featuring Hefin O'Hare and Shaw. But back came Connacht with another touchdown from Conor McPhillips. Report from Sporting Life
