No hanging about for Mike Cusack

Michael Cusack impressed on his Glasgow debut
New Glasgow prop Michael Cusack wants to make his mark early on when the Warriors take on Munster at Firhill tonight (ko 7.30pm).

The new signing from Doncaster Knights says winning the first scrum against the defending champions at Firhill would hand his side a crucial early psychological advantage.

Mike told the Evening Times: “You want to lay down a marker from the very first scrum, and that will be our intention tonight. Last week at Ulster the first scrum came almost on our line and we had to win that one and it set us up for a decent perfor-mance up front.

Munster may be the defending champions but, if we can get on top of them in the first couple of scrums, it will definitely put the pressure on them. When that happens, technique can break down a bit and guys can try too hard and start to make mistakes.

“But, as the home side, if you are winning your scrums, it also gets the fans involved so, as a pack, we have got to be on our mettle from the first whistle.

“Glasgow have had some big wins in their first home games in the past couple of seasons, like beating Leinster last time around. We feel we are going into this one with a bit of frustration in the side after a good performance against Ulster went unrewarded. Tonight it is all about winning.”

Mike arrives with a big reputation as a strong scrummager, impressing in his debut against Ulster last week, and the 26-year-old says he's ready for the new challenge the RaboDirect Pro12 presents: “Although the impact in the scrums is pretty much the same as it is in the Champion-ship, where things really differ is in the speed the game is played at and the mobility of the players.

“I’d also say the impact in one-on-one collisions is far more severe. But, all in all, I was happy with my debut and it was a decent start to my Glasgow career although disappointing to lose a game we were well in for long periods.”
