Club Round-up 7

Glasgow Hawks turned over Premiership pacesetters Currie
Champions Glasgow Hawks burst back to prime form to demolish Premier pacesetters Currie 42-5 with a clinical display of finishing at Old Anniesland.

Their superiority was underlined when Mike Adamson claimed a hat-trick - all three coming in succession.

Adamson also slotted three conversions and two penalties for a personal tally of 27 points, with the other Hawks touchdowns coming from Greg Francis (two), John Fitzpatrick and Kenny Sinclair.

Currie were simply blown away in the swirling conditions and there was no way back after the hosts raced into a 25-0 interval lead with the elements at their backs.

The only response from the shellshocked visitors was a try by Chris Browne in the dying minutes.

A volley of two tries in quick succession by Nick Lavelle provided the launchpad for Ayr to sweep aside the challenge of Melrose with a 40-10 win at Millbrae.

Ally MacFarlane inflicted the initial damage by stealing scrum ball before it was whipped out to Lavelle via lock Damien Kelly.

Ben Colley added a penalty before then Lavelle completed his quickfire double with a similar effort.

The Borderers broke their duck with a Scott Wight penalty following the sin-binning of Ayr stand-off Richard McCallum.

Colley immediately restored the home advantage before MacFarlane squeezed over for try number three, converted by Colley.

Referee Ian Ramage then showed yellow cards at Lavelle and Melrose's Graham Dodds before, after the restart, the Borderers burst back into the game with a try by Calum Anderson, goaled by Wight.

But stoppage-time efforts by Paul Burke and Pat McArthur, both converted by Colley, completed the rout.

Aberdeen recorded their first victory of the season as they dumped Hawick 16-10 in a Rubislaw basement battle that lived up to its tag.

Fluent rugby was conspicuous by its absence in tricky conditions, with the kicking accuracy of Ben Spearitt tilting the balance in favour of the Dons.

He converted three penalties and converted Euan Campbell's touchdown. Hawick's try came from Alex Time, while Graham Hogg also had a conversion and penalty.

Watsonians jumped to the top of the table by outgunning Dundee HSFP 29-17 at Myreside.

Mike Ker was the man in the spotlight as he bagged a superb try and a sequence of crucial kicks.

Other scorers were Duncan Brown, player-coach Cammy Mather and Geoff Nicholson.

The Taysiders had many positive moments and they broke through via Mark Jenkinson and Graham Thomson, while Dean Jones added two conversions and a penalty.

Boroughmuir snatched a maximum points haul by thumping Heriot's 27-10 in the capital derby at Goldenacre.

Angus Martyn, Charlie Keenan, Greg Cotterill and Chris Capaldi were the men who mattered for Muir, their tries making sure of the bonus award.

Ross Cook weighed in to land the rest of the points with the boot.

Captain Roddy Deans picked up the Heriot's touchdown, with James Thomson slotting a conversion and penalty.

Stirling County stretched their lead at the top of Premier Two when they blew Kelso away at Bridgehaugh. The 67-12 scoreline reflected their dominance throughout and the try scoring was liberally spread, with Glasgow apprentice Ben Addison and Sam Parlane notching two each and Brian Archibald grabbing sixteen points with eight conversions.

The Edinburgh derby saw Stewart's Melville come from 10-0 down at the break against Edinburgh Accies to storm back and win 24-17 to go third in the table.

Accies had tries from Mike and Greg Campbell as well as a penalty try, but the tries from Stewart Kerr, Peter McLean, Areta Tanoi and Alex Cox earned Stew Mel the bonus and a jump up the table. They leapfrog GHA, who went down 28-14 to Hamilton at Laigh Bent, with the home side clinching the points thanks to tries from David Gemmell, Ally Marshall and Ron Strydon with Kenny Diffenthal slotting three penalties and a conversion. GHA replied with tries from Miller and Watson and a conversion and four penalties from Jimmy Noonan.

Jed's 10-0 win over Hillhead Jordanhill at Riverside pulled them up the table. All the scoring came in the first half with a Robert Hogg try converted by Gary McGarva, who also landed a penalty.
