Glasgow Warriors 43 - 25 Leinster

United Rugby Championship match played at Scotstoun on Sunday October 22nd 2023 | No comments

Player-of-the-match Huw Jones went over for a try and looked dangerous throughout
Glasgow Warriors opened their new URC season with a 43-25 bonus-point win over Leinster at Scotstoun this afternoon.

Tries from Josh McKay, Sebastian Cancelliere, Huw Jones and Angus Fraser secured Glasgow's try bonus point before half-time. Two Harry Byrne penalties and a Jack Boyle kept Leinster in touch.

Slack Glasgow play and and improved Leinster upped their game after the break and - helped by some slack Glasgow play - closed the gap to just four points as Lee Barron and Tommy O'Brien crossed either side of George Horne's try.

However, Johnny Matthews went over to give Glasgow a bit of breathing space before a late penalty try made the win look more comfortable on the scoreboard than it really was.

Glasgow head coach Franco Smith was pleased with his side's efforts in defence, telling Viaplay Sports: "It was a classic start-of-the-season game. We made lots of errors, but if you don't try you won't get better. Excited to start the season with a win, and I'm pleased with the defensive resilience.

"Very excited to see [youngsters] taking their opportunity. They stepped up tonight and learned a couple of lessons.

"[George Horne] is a special guy, he works really hard, he's got a great influence on the team and he's a fantastic man. His try was something to remember."

Glasgow's Huw Jones was named Player of the Match and has been giving his thoughts post-match:

"That was really hard," he said on Viaplay Sports. "They were camped in our half for quite a lot of that second half and there was some unbelievable defence in there.

When asked if Stafford McDowall meant the kick that led to Jones' try, the Scotland centre replied: "Absolutely not.

"[The win] gives us loads of confidence. Leinster are a top team; the boys had a great pre-season and we've come out firing."
