December 28, 2024Edinburgh 10 - 7 Glasgow WarriorsUnited Rugby Championship match played at Murrayfield on Saturday December 28th 2024 | No comments
"I'm proud of my boys anyway, they stayed in the fight." Franco Smith Glasgow Warriors leave Murrayfield with just a bonus point and the 1872 Cup to show for their efforts after a 10-7 defeat to Edinburgh in a dour contest this afternoon. Former Glasgow stand-off Ross Thompson put Edinburgh 3-0 ahead after 22 minutes. Glasgow looked out of sorts for much of the first half with Edinburgh managing to slow down the ball - sometimes legally - at the breakdown. Warriors were also on the wrong side of referee Eoghan Cross and struggled to get back on it throughout. A Glasgow penalty try 12 minutes from the end put the visitors ahead and saw Edinburgh reduced to 14 players with replacement hooker Patrick Harrison seeing yellow. However, Glasgow were unable to secure the restart and with their defence stretched Pierre Schoeman twisted over the line for the try that edged Edinburgh back in front. Ben Healy kicked the conversion. Taking about the loss, Glasgow Warriors head coach Franco Smith told BBC Scotland: "It's not that tough to take. I thought Edinburgh did really well so compliments to them. "We kept on knocking on the door. They were much more organised, much better than last week. I don't think we got much wrong, they got so much right. "To bounce back from last week's defeat is fantastic for them. I'm proud of my boys anyway, they stayed in the fight. There was some misfortune here and there, we could have won the game. "They got together this week and produced, as they did after the Lions defeat earlier in the season. They are a quality team, we've said that all year. They've got some character and they proved that again tonight. "I thought they did well to keep us out. There was a lot of questions asked from our perspective about why we couldn't convert. "We got our noses in front there, but compliments to Edinburgh again. They targeted that breakdown to turn it over and that led to their try. It's what they did, it's not what we didn't do. "The boys are really producing. Our squad depth was challenged and is challenged. But I'm looking forward to getting some boys back soon." After the game, Glasgow flanker Rory Darge told BBC Scotland: "With these games, the most important thing is the league points. We've picked up a losing bonus point and that's it, so it's a sore one. "It's difficult to stay. There's loads of different things. It wasn't just the breakdown, or attack or defence. There were loads of things that were a six or seven out of 10, rather than eight or nine like last week. "We all have to try and figure out why that happened and make sure we don't allow ourselves to move forward like that. [On Europe] "We got a good result against Sale and pushed Toulon right to the end. We're excited by the next two games, one at Scotstoun and one down at Quins. Loads to play for and if we perform well in those two games, the results takes care of themselves."
