Scotland are set to play Australia at Hampden
Hampden Park in Glasgow looks set to stage a match between Scotland and Australia in the autumn.

Plans are being finalised for Scotland to play Australia at the home of Scottish football on Saturday, November 20.

Reports today say the SRU and Glasgow City Council are set to announce details of the clash, which it's reported could be worth between £1m-£2m to the cash-strapped rugby body and would also provide a welcome financial spin-off for Hampden.

Details are still being ironed out for the proposed autumn Test match, which would clash with the first round of the Tennnent's Scottish Cup and would necessitate Queen's Park being asked to switch should they get a home draw.

SRU chief executive Phil Anderton is desperate to boost the national side's profile throughout Scotland, and a Hampden autumn Test against Australia is a key part of that strategy.

Scotland will also face Japan at McDiarmid Park on November 13. Scotland will meet the Aussies at Murrayfield on November 6 in the first Test with their other autumn Test date against South Africa at Murrayfield on the 27th.

Not for the first time-1885 Inter City -1906 Scotland v South Africa.
For the best part of 60 years Queens Park played an annual charity match against a Rugby select with rules and numbers per side varying to make it a contest

Pedantry, I know, but the 1885 match was played at Second Hampden Park. It, of course, became Cathkin Park, home to the late-lamented Third Lanark AC, when Queen's Park FC moved to the present Hampden Park in 1903.

PS I just noted from the SRU's press release that McDiarmid Park would be the seventh ground to host international rugby in this country. It is, of course, the eighth. As well as the 1885 match referred to above, Scotland played at least one match against England at Second Hampden Park.

Back to Big Blue-did you know that the bold Glasgow Accies beat Queens Park to being the first "football" team of either code to tour England playing Liverpool and Manchester in 1870 before the great Queens Park's two visits to the FA Cup Final
