Glasgow Development XV to play Ayr

Hugh Campbell will take a Glasgow development side to face Ayr at Millbrae
As part of their pre-season warm-up, Glasgow Warriors are taking a development side to face Ayr at Millbrae on Monday August 15th with a 7pm kick off.

Ayr's official website reports that Glasgow head coach Hugh Campbell agreed that it was just the sort of training work out his players would need before the Celtic League kicks off.

"The squad is in great shape" he enthused "and the guys have really felt the benefit of having a summer away from playing when they have been able to relax and work on their fitness and other aspects of their game. It will make a change from getting together a week or so before the first match as has happened in the past after summer tours."

Ayr coach Craig Redpath reckoned it was the sort of session his team would need to assess where they were in their preparation before going into the Premier 1 League campaign the following week.

"Hopefully this will generate a fair bit of interest at Millbrae and around Ayrshire" he said "because I am sure that Hugh will want to give some of his top players some game time."

If that turns out to be the case, it could produce the intriguing possibility of an old rivalry being renewed as Ayr's Nick Lavelle could find himself facing Scotland No10 Dan Parks, a confrontation that happened more than once during their club careers in Sydney.

A development side? Does that mean that Glasgow Ws are planning to raid the club teams before the season is even started?

Why change a habit?

If there's no cash being made available to bring in players then next best, and the only thing apart from bringing in trialists, is take them from the amateur game.

This subject is being brought up high on the agenda of the next SRU meeting.

Not alot of happy people with the SRU on both amateur and pro ranks over a number of things surrounding this area of the Scottish game.

You are sure right there the clubs that give the most to support the pro teams get the least back it is a one way street

I find it a trifle ironic that the SRU can't afford to pay £6k for a young apprentice in Scotland and have to cut the apron strings yet bring in an Australian trialist for a couple of months and make payments of a higher nature for that trialist's services.

Agree with your comment.
If we continue to bring in players from abroad, why are players eg AJ McFarlane, moving to Ayr, when the chances are that he will not get contract with SRU?

Surely these players would be better staying at their present clubs, and passing on their ecperience to others.

Another young Glasgow prop has just signed for Moseley--why --because the set up here does not encourage young Scots
