Sean happy with the win

Sean Lineen was happy with the effort of his players
Sean Lineen, the Glasgow coach, was pleased with the result of last night's game with Borders, if not the manner in which it was achieved.

"I was frustrated by the little bits we're still not doing well," he said in The Scotsman, "but, of course, I'm happy with the win and the fact we kept them to nil, especially as we've been labelled the worst defensive team in the league.

"I thought the effort they put in was great and there were a lot of good bits.

"We are still not playing champagne rugby, but what this will do is give the players confidence - they won without really playing."

Good clinical win .Kept the scoreboard ticking over nicely but it must be exasperating for the coaches to get into scoring positions and only register one score.Thats the problem against the welsh and irish teams.Hi under 2000 looked more than that to me how many dont pay

Just what I was wondering, I know of several members of Hillhead/Jordanhill RFC who get in by showing their memberships, I wonder if the whole Club has caught on to this? I honestly thought that there were a lot more that 2,000 at the game last night.

My sentiments entirely. Thought that there was a lot more, than the figure published. Have spoken to a few people who were there, and they are amazed with the attendance figures given.

If Hil/Jills members are getting themselves in without paying, why do the rest of us who support Glasgow Rugby, not get in for free, as well?.

Again I repeat, having been on about the same subject before, on a Friday or any day that Glasgow are there, it IS NOT A HILL/Jills event!!!! They should pay like the rest of us.

MGJ, I see your point about Hiil/Jills members not paying to get in but I think that you are forgetting that it is the ground is not owned by Hillhead/Jordanhill Rugby Club but by Hillhead/Jordanhill Sports Club. Here lies the problem, as someone who plays tennis there has the legitimate reason to show their membership card and claim to be going into the club house for a drink and there is not a single thing that GW or the SRU can do to prevent this. Now in the most unlikely situation that said person is not entirley honest then yes some people are getting in for free but I am afraid unless this loop hole is closed, how I don't know, then there will always be free loaders at Warriors games.

Agreed that it seemed really busy when you first came into the ground - it was crowded up that end, and around the bar, but when you came down past the stand towards the far end, it was much quieter - the stand was full yes, but towards the scoreboard there were fewer people than normal - wonder if crowding of people in certain areas inflated the appearance of the crowd. What we need is a few more Jim Telfer's around - saw him at the game, how far had he travelled, what does he have to gain now by keeping attending, other than enjoying, supporting, etc...too many other people have just given up going...

I'd have thought there were more there too. However the challenge is there for Charles Shaw to sell it. At least on Friday's evidence the players are doing the basics right - solid defence; a very decent forward effort and taking the points when they were in the opposition's territory. Sure it would be nice to see more flair in the backs, but there were some signs of improvement including one sublime pasing move late on when the ball fairly rocketed out to Hefin. Hopefully with confidence will come flair.

Keep it up.

A good performance. I understand Sean's frustrations, however we must recognise that, (certainly in the first half before Borders went to sleep), on nearly every decent venture in to the Border's 22, we came away with points...that is what good teams do! If we can build on this, then we will get 7 instead of 3 more often. Colin Gregor was on fire, as were Thom Evans & Heffin, however we must be concerned that Johnny Barclay was forced into that inspired kick to manufacture a good try. The build up was fast & well structured down the right wing, Bevvy controlled the breakdown area, (and gave young Cuisiter food for thought on occasions), but when he fired it into the midfiled, for another wave of attack, play went into slo-mo in the centre field, hence Johnny having to release Thom with a kick. If we can get the midfield to continue the attack at the kind of pace Heffin & Thom can play the game at, we will have a very good team indeed.

Finally, why did our forwards fail to make any kind of distance with the ball in hand, yet the Border's forwards continually charged us back 2, 3& 4 metres at a time. Forwards - look at the video footage and each of you ask yourself questions about your impact...to see a 21 stone prop getting stopped immediately after he collects the ball must be soul destroying for the backs. There were several occasions when backs, particularly G-Dog, burst the line after the forwards had failed...TIME TO FRONT UP GUYS , YOU GOT BULLIED OUT OF THE GAME ON FRIDAY!

Before the game on Friday there was a lot of talk about the power of the Borders pack - it's been their main strength and has, in the past, bullied us out of games. That didn't happen on Friday. I thought our pack took it to them - the Borders pack tried to dominate but couldn't. I think this was pretty much reflected in the penalty count. Granted, there are plenty of things to work on - 21 stone is all well and good but it's easier to stop when it's so upright - some sessions on body angles may be required - but to say they were bullied is way off the mark.

Body positions is only one area, but further analysis of the video, if you can get your hands on it, will show the Borders forwards continually making ground with the ball, whereas the Glasgow forwards struggled to manage half a step forward...and that is as much attitude as it is body postion, the willingness to fend, wriggle & pump the legs, rather than just stop. the scrum was okay and the lineout was okay, but if your pack can't carry the ball forward & suck in defenders, you will always be struggling. On occasions, individuals like Donnie did show agression, but removal of the pale-blue-tinted specticals & some honest analysis shows that the Borders pack still had the upper hand and in my view bullied the Glasgow pack...we should be greatful that the referee was on hand to keep the perspective in penalties or they would have run riot up front. We were also fortunate that the Borders backs didn't turn up.

Fair enough, that's your opinion. In my opinion it's way off the mark. If Friday was an example of being bullied, then long may it continue if we end up with a 25-0 win.

Yes a 25-0 win is good, but I agree that all is not yet wonderful-Jim is mostly correct-Borders had most of the possession & most of the territory-they just didn't have the skill level to convert possession into points. The scrum creaked on occassion & Glasgow were on the back foot in a number of forward exchanges-they also lost 3 lineouts when Lawson came on. Agreed Borders were under pressure in the loose, hence the penalty count, but a lot of the penalties conceded by Borders fell into the "stupid" bracket (ones that Glasgow in the past have given away!!). However the team is getting better & the pack ARE performing better as a unit-but still a long way to go. Let's take it to the Ospreys!!
