Debut for John Beattie

Posted by Editor on November 7, 2006 11:06 AM | 26 comments | Print | E-mail author

John Beattie makes his Scotland debut
Glasgow's John Beattie and Euan Murray are in Scotland's starting line-up for the match with Romania at Murrayfield on Saturday.

Another Warrior, Scott Lawson, is among Scotland's replacements.

John wins his first Scotland cap while Euan will make his first start at international level.

Edinburgh's Rob Dewey is another debutant and there are a further two uncapped players on the bench, forwards David Callam and Jim Hamilton. Edinburgh's Phil Godman makes his first start.

Scotland head coach Frank Hadden said: "There were a number of players I was particularly keen to see playing at this level – Godman, Dewey, Beattie, Euan Murray and Hamilton and on that basis I've looked at the balance of the rest of the side and how best these players can be accommodated.

"That said, what this match is about is building on the progress we made last season and fielding a winning Scotland team. I'm not sacrificing our goal of winning a fourth successive game at Murrayfield for the first time in 11 years simply to introduce new players."

Hadden believes consistent displays in the Magners League have earned the new caps their chance but stresses: "I'm having a look to see how they fare. I know we have very good players in their positions and I expect Rob and Johnnie to rise to that. If they want to see themselves as contenders for the Scotland team they have to show me that desire on Saturday."

Hadden has opted for a five/two split between forwards and backs on the bench and has indicated his intent to deploy both Allan Jacobsen and Craig Smith at some stage as competition for front-row berths intensifies.

Good to see the lads getting the start they deserve. If you are a "Warrior" and at the game, make a bit of noise for the lads, they will need to play out of their skins in this Edinburgh invitation side. If there is a lineout or a breakdown in front of you, shout the boys names & encourage them as loud as your can, (assuming you are near enough to be heard),we need to get behind our own & help them to grow that extra hoof!

Totally agree - about time! (and not just because I happen to think that "fat, slow and prone to indiscipline at crucial moments" is a fabulous assessment of the recent international performances of the ever-cheerful(!) Simon Taylor). Great to see our players at last being given a chance to shine, will be leaving the Scotland shirt at home and wearing my Glasgow gear on Sat. Make some noise for the Glasgow boys!!

I agree, great to see the likes of John & Euan get the chance their hard work deserves but think there is no need to be slagging off other seasoned professionals who Scotland by and large are lucky to have i.e. Taylor, it only pangs of nonsense Glasgow & edinburgh, Us and them small mindedness. When it come to interantionals we are all in the same boat

Before I offend other ST fans should point out that the above comment was quoted from a newspaper column questioning whether he should still be automatic first choice for Scotland No 8 slot ahead of promising new talent such as JB. As a Scotland fan residing in England at the height of the Cozza/Dallaglio Wilko/Hodgson furore I sympathised with the author's view that the superstar status of some players should not always prevent others having an opportunity to showcase their abilities, and I think there has been a degree of this with Taylor. I don't dispute that on his day he can be a very fine addition to the Scotland squad...

Congratulations to John and Euan. Do us proud lads!

Slightly...well, actually very dissapointing to see that there arn't more Warriors in the side. Totally agree that we need to get behind the boys that are in and boost them as much as we can. That being said, I think it's about time the coach (lineen) did the same. Word on the street is that Hadden wanted to go with experience over allowing some of the fringe players who have been contending for spots a chance. "But we're playing Romania, Frank!...Romania." Let the boys play coach.

Cant wait for Saturday's game! Hope that the number of Warrior boys improves with the games and cant wait to cheer on any Warriors at all the games!!John deserves the start after coming so close in the summer! Hope that he is on the form for Glasgow has he has been with the Warriors! Good Luck to all the boys for Saturday but in particular in Glasgow Boys!!!!

Is there a reason Dan Parks isn't even on the bench? Godman is not nearly as good a flyhalf as DP. I'd put money on our boy starting in the next two games. That goes for Henderson at 12 also.

It'll be interesting to see how Euan Murray fronts up, Romania have some big lads in the pack but they'll be a pushover compared to the bruisers the Islanders can put out. Hopefully his great fitness will see him at least come on in the next game as he just never looks tired but he'll really have to be doing real damage to his opposite number in this game to get him a start in the next.

Good luck boys!

Dream start?

Phil Godman dead leg after 5 minutes, Paterson to stand-off?

Posted by realitycheck on November 8, 2006 04:50 PM | Reply to this comment

Is there a reason!!??!!?? Probably too many to mention but lets just start with the fact that Godman is a YOUNG, SCOTTISH prospect and not a flaming half baked Aussie who wasn't thought highly enough of in his own country to be selected by them! I'm a Warriors fan but Godman impresses me more than Dan the Man.

I don't think there is any reason for your racist abuse of the man. If your only reason for not liking DPs style of play is because he wasn't born in Scotland then you have no reason or any place coaching.

Whether he is as good as Godman is a matter of opinion and something I would be happy to discuss but not with someone who spouts abusive, ofensive, rubbish like your last.

Not on....

Well said, Sunday5. Theres no room for racists in our sport!!!!

Posted by realitycheck on November 8, 2006 05:28 PM | Reply to this comment

Not abusive or racist just factual! where was he going in Aussie rugby? Nowhere! Why do you think he came here? Gravy train! How many good young prospects have had to move away from Scotland because we've allowed Southern Hemisphere players of questionable talent take the places in our pro teams that should have been used to develop SCOTTISH players? What did the likes of Laney do for Scottish rugby? ZILCH! Do the Aussies or New Zealanders allow any foreigners into their representative teams? NO! Get a grip guys!

Posted by Ewok Burger on November 8, 2006 05:49 PM | Reply to this comment

New Zealand don't take foreign players into their side? You're living in cloud cukoo land pal! Have a wee look through their great players and see how many Tongans, Samoans and Fijians they have. There has even been a call for players to be allowed to play for their native countries after playing as many as 5 full internationals for the All Blacks because they are being bled by a team that is little more than a Lions side.
Keep it for the rallies, Adolf!

Ewok (I presume that is your real name) people are allowed on this forum to make comments. I think if the moderator had felt that my comments were racist/abusive they would not have been posted. Please refrain from using such inflammatory terms as 'Adolf'. You know nothing about me personally, in fact for all you know (which is very little in rugby terms) I may in fact find such a comment offensive. Instead I will treat them with the contempt that they truly deserve. It is because of stupid and crass people such as you that the SRU had to pull the plug on their chatroom. As this forum is obviously being abused by such as yourself, I intend to make this my last appearance (and yes, I can already hear you saying Thank God). Instead I will content myself with conversing of a Friday night with people who do not make personal attacks on someone whose opinion differs from their own. You, I would imagine, will be playing about with the other children on the embankment at the Hughenden Rd end.

I think everyone should calm down a bit. I'd rather not have to remove comments but I will if I feel it's necessary. Can I also say I'd prefer people to stick to one user name when commenting rather than having 2 or 3 names. I'm afraid it looks pretty daft when people post under one name and then agree with their own point using another one.

I was under the impression that New Zealand and Australia had included Samoans, Fijians, Tongans, South Africans and Argentinians in their representative teams. And, surely it depends on the player, rather than where he comes from - Glenn Metcalfe and Tommy Hayes contributed at club and professional level. Guys like Mark Sitch and Rod Seib contributed at club level. Surely guys like that bring a positive influence to Scottish teams? If we're only going to rely on "Scottish" players then we may as well chuck it at pro level. Nobody else does it. And, while I can think of a few young players who have had to move away from Scotland I can't think of many that we can say "got away".

i think this reality check character needs to have a look at himself. firstly there is no space for racisim at all here, secondly parks is clearly better hence he has played more games than godman, just look at the stats. i hope our boys front up an out shine the edinburgh select that has been chosen...to be honest this team is a joke, Hadden should b ashamed.

I think Dan's ability to kick the ball further than 5 meters up the pitch is a big plus point in his favour

Posted by mediumsizedal on November 8, 2006 11:09 PM | Reply to this comment

Sorry reality, in this case I think you are wrong (I think you are largely right in your arguement with jim!!-but that's another case). Rugby is a global game & players will play for whoevever pays them. NZ et al have played flags of convenience for years & so have the 4 home nations. Dan Parks has played well for Glasgow & has won games for them-OK he's not the best in the world, but he has done a good job. Shame he's not on the bench & I agree Godman does not look the part. We just don't have a huge pool of players to be choosy. By the way I also think Bevvy might be on his way at the end of the season, but Pinder seems to have lost the plot recently. I would have liked more Glasgow players in the squad, but this is an experimental game & I think the squads for the other autumn games will be completely different. I just hope Hadden has not underestimated the Romanians-I'd hate to see us lose the game.

Dan's not involved because it's Romania and we need to expand our options prior to the World Cup - not just in terms of players but the flexibility that certain players (like Paterson) can offer by playing in more than one position. Have a look at the Aussies with Giteau, Larkham, Rogers and Tuquiri all palying their 'alternate' position last week. Or The ABs with an extra prop on the bench and Reuben Thorne covering second row.

Bearing in mind our population is 5 million and there are estimated to be around 50 million people around the globe who can claim Scottish heritage it would be crazy to only consider those who were born and raised in Scotland for selection. (Not to mention you could name players in every one of the major rugby playing nations in the last ten years who required some kind of residential or ancestor qualification.) A number of these guys have made big contributions to Scottish rugby, some less so but they do expand our options. Oh and as for the All Blacks the vast majority of the Samoans etc. (eg Tana Umaga) selected for them were either born or raised and educated in New Zealand. Bringing it up is a fantastic way to wind up Kiwis though!

I'm afraid to have some "complaints" after my comments but lets go.
There are some comments, complaints about the "Edinburgh squad" for Saturday.
Do you want to have 5 players from the 3 pro teams?
Toulouse and Stade Francais provide the French team because there are the best teams in the French Championship.
That's right i can't give my opinion because i don't know the form/level of Scottish players in the Magners League.
BUT i think Hadden has done a good job (no comment about Williams and Co), he works to have a successful Scottish team, he is not the Edinburgh coach anymore.
He is trying Dewey, i think it's better to give him a chance with confidence having team mates around.
I want to see Glasgow successful, next Saturday is an International game and everyone should be behind SCOTLAND.

Just a word about overseas players with Scottish heritage, guys like Glenn Metcalfe and the Leslie's brothers contributed.
I don't know if Ben Macdougall is good or not, but there is no way to spend fortunes if there are the same/better talents in Scotland.

This is an experimental side. Hadden is trying out some new players and new combinations at this level and good luck to them. It is NOT the side that'll play Auatralia. I can't see why everyone is so annoyed about it.

Well said - good luck to Scotland tomorrow, and in particular to Euan and Johnny!
