James Eddie is back in contention after injury
Glasgow Warriors have named a 24-man squad for Friday's Magners League clash with Munster at Firhill (ko 7:45pm).

Six of the eight Warriors that tasted front-line action during Scotland’s RBS 6 Nations campaign return to club duty for the match with the European champions.

Two of Scotland’s most potent attackers, Thom and Max Evans, are straight back into the mix alongside hooker Dougie Hall, prop Moray Low, flanker Kelly Brown and lock Alastair Kellock.

Speaking as the squad convened for training this morning, Warriors head coach Sean Lineen, said: “We’re really looking forward to playing the leading team in Europe on Friday night. They’re a side with enormous pride and it’ll be a massive challenge for us.

“We’re playing against a team and a country full of confidence after Ireland’s Grand Slam win on Saturday and I’m sure Munster will get a few of their international players back for this game.

“We’ll need that great Firhill crowd behind us which I’m sure will be as eager as I am to get back to winning ways at home.”

Utility back Colin Gregor is also named in the 24-man squad following his stewardship of the Scotland 7s squad to the Plate title at the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Dubai.

The Warriors could also see flanker James Eddie return from injury having last appeared for the Warriors during their historic Heineken Cup victory over Toulouse in France.

Glasgow Warriors

Forwards: Tim Barker, Johnnie Beattie, Kelly Brown, James Eddie, Calum Forrester, Dougie Hall, Ed Kalman, Alastair Kellock CAPTAIN, Moray Low, Stevie Swindall, Fergus Thomson, Kevin Tkachuk, Dan Turner, Justin Va'a

Backs: Max Evans, Thom Evans, Colin Gregor, Peter Horne (West of Scotland)*, Ruaridh Jackson, Mark McMillan, Dan Parks, José María Núñez Piossek, Colin Shaw, Bernardo Stortoni

* = Member of Scottish Rugby’s Contracted National Academy

Shame we won't have GDog or John back, but fantastic to see Jim is back after his injury. Hope he plays on Friday, after a nightmare season for him in term of injuries.

Wonder what sort of Squad Munster will send. They had 8 guys in the Test team and have Leinster in the ML and the HC 1/4s coming up.

No matter what team they send it will be tough as their back ups almost beat the All Blacks in the Autumn.

What is up with John Barclay?

Its a big game on Friday a win and we are back in with a chance of a decent finish in the Leauge a loss and we will struggle to finish outside the bottom 3 or 4.

My understanding is that some of the Scotland squad players were offered a week off after their time in Haddy's company and Morrison and Barclay opted to take it.

Anyone know where Lome Fa'atau is - still with us?

He was at Glasgow Accies minis tournament yesterday along with Stevie Swindall & Justin Va'a. Don't know if we'll see him playing again though.
Good to see James Eddie back in contention though.

He is back training and thought he might be in the squad for Friday. Go to know we will have a full team again, fit and well.

Anyone know whats happening with Dan Parks contract is it up for renewal at the end of the season????? Any word on him re-signing??????

Posted by Derek on March 23, 2009 04:08 PM | Reply to this comment

People have asked on here about Dan a few times, he is out of contract in the Summer.

Seeing as we are heading into April soon and he has not re-signed suggests that either he is unsure of re-signing or the club are not sure of him

It must be him stalling for time. The club would not dither about resigning the stand alone best Flyhalf in the country.

I can see how he'd feel let down tho now we have a third rate schoolboy playing 10 for Scotland. Why should he stay here? I for one hope he does.

Ah the Dan Parks fan club resurfaces! What a disparaging comment about Godman - surely it's better to have a home grown prospect rather than a failed Aussie reject? Anyway I think Ruaraidh jackson will be the Scotland 10 - 'stand off ' is a bit dated - in the not too distant future and we can lay to rest the Parks debate for once and for all. He doesn't fulfil his defensive duties, he doesn't bring his midfield backs into play enough, he gives away intercepts - but he does kick well. Deep joy!! Think Muffles will enjoy French rugby, he'll probably see more ball in a game than he has in half a dozen out side Parks!

Big talk from such a wee man.

Eh?

Jackson isn't ready. Godman isn't as good as Parks. Parks is in fact the best stand off in the country.

Wee man.

I think it's you that has 'wee man syndrome'!
I wonder where you get your ideas on rugby? A comic? Or maybe the Daily Record?
And I didn't say that Ruaraidh should be playing now - of course he needs time to play at 10 and that's in the Glasgow team instead of DP. The problem with Scottish Rugby is that our youngsters are held back for too long because mercenaries like Parks keep them out of our professional teams. If you had your way Jackson would probably get his first cap as a thirtieth birthday present, 'big head'. (And no way is that a comparison with Brian Clough!)

Wind your neck in and/or stop watching so many soaps! What a drama-queen! Jackson is a 21 year old who has shown some sparks of great potential along with some huge errors. But Parks does not and will not keep him out of the team. Its up to both players to rise to the challenge of upping their game to start at 10 for Glasgow. I happen to believe Parks has proven during his years of service to Glasgow Rugby that he is more able to do that but sincerely hope Jackson will learn from him and, one day, when he is ready, fill his boots.

You stick to watching your soaps! Drama queen? Are you and Sunday 5 one and the same? Thought this was a forum - and for your information that's somewhere to 'air one's opinions'.

Posted by vicki on March 24, 2009 07:59 PM | Reply to this comment

I don't hide behind aliases, don't feel the need to.

If you looked at the time of the posting you'd see that I'm no soap fan! You and Sunday 5 are pretty quick with the name calling for a couple who appear to know hee haw about rugby!
And by the way this is a forum - free and frank exchange of opinions. You 2 seem to think anyone who disagrees with you should be slagged off!

Posted by vicki on March 24, 2009 08:29 PM | Reply to this comment

One rule for you, and another for the rest of us?

Posted by jimbo on March 25, 2009 07:16 AM | Reply to this comment

what do you mean 'mercenaries like dan parks'? Do you honestly think that rugby players - who, by the way, play rugby for a career the same way you go to work every day - should have to step aside every time something new comes along? Parks plays rugby for glasgow because he gets picked and because he is good. Thats the way team selection works. Usually.

As I said previously, I'm past caring about Scotland results, so from a purely Glasgow point of view, I hope DP stays with the team. Whatever potential Ruaridh does or doesn't fulfill, he is nowhere near ready to be our first choice No 10 / stand-off yet. If we intend to do anything next season, other than challenge Connacht for bottom place of the ML, we need Dan. Simples.

Posted by sunday5 on March 24, 2009 06:01 PM | Reply to this comment

Well said. Although I'm sure there will be some that will argue with even this blatant fact.

Posted by manattheback on March 24, 2009 08:26 PM | Reply to this comment

Yup, you're right Sunday 5. I do disagree - and by the way someone's opinion about DP doesn't make it a fact just because YOU agree with it!

Posted by monster-munch on March 24, 2009 10:52 PM | Reply to this comment

So your basically saying Glasgow's a one man team then? Dan doesn't play so it's bottom poition in ML? Get real.

manattheback .. this is not a forum but the front page of the site. Can I suggest you post on the forum if you wish further sensible debate? (I presume you are registered there) and the arguments can continue if that's what you want!
Vicki and Sunday5 are definitely not one and the same ..I can vouch for that!! ;)

I cannot believe the comments from the anti DP brigade: you know who you are and should hang your heads in shame. He is an excellent professional - a real team man who communicates with, cajoles and encourages those around him. Oh, another thing, does he not consistently find himself at the top of the ML highest scorers table? Remember he was also the Scottish Players "Player of the Tournament" at the last RWC. His confidence has undoubtedly suffered as a result of all the vitriolic bile that comes his way, but he has proven himself time and time again to be at the heart of the Glasgow team. Presumably the emergence of Thom & Max, as well as the rejuvenation of Gdog must have something to do with the amount of ball that they receive - and presumably that must have something to do with DP? Give the guy our support, he deserves it. Leave the barracking to the Embra supporters who clearly know no better!

Posted by Alsfan on March 24, 2009 11:39 PM | Reply to this comment

Totally agree. Warriors 33 Toulouse 26 .. who was in charge? Who is THE MAN? Shocking comments from Glasgow supporters considering what he has done for our team. If he had been in a top team, he would be hailed as a brilliant player. Get behind him!

Posted by The Munchkin on March 25, 2009 09:17 AM | Reply to this comment

I do like DP as a player although the last two games, maybe have not been the best due to the weather and the team available. But when his kicking game is at his best, how often does he gets us up the pitch into their 22 or get's the ball out to the other backs when there is an overlap or space. Ruaridh may has not played as many first 15 games but he is definitely becoming a good player with his speed and kicking ability. With the two of them on the squad, training together, Dan hopefully will be passing on some of his knoewledge to Ruaridh for the future.

Dan didn't have a great game against Ulster, but with conditions like that who would have? Humphreys only got one shot on goal and that was straight in front of the posts, and kicks were doing a (wet) banana impression.

In an ideal world we'd definitely keep Dan as he can absolutely murder teams. Who else would have done that massive Garryowen against Cardiff? He would also be a great tutor for Ruaridh.

However, I fear there will be budgetary constraints, the need to strengthen elsewhere (Front 5 please, Sean) and with Ruaridh coming through, a big offer from France or England wouldn't get matched.

He's been a fantastic player for Glasgow, very pleasant and approachable bloke too, it would be sad to see him go.

Parksy, When you win the game on the weekend make sure you thank manattheback for some inspiring words of confidence. You have given your all for Glasgow and for Scotland and you should be proud of that. I would not have been able to put up with the abuse the media or the so-called fans have given you. You know who your friends are champ. Just remember that.

Posted by manattheback on March 26, 2009 07:42 AM | Reply to this comment

And as for the other 21 players?
Do you read the papers and see some comments made by reporters, splashed across the back page, about footballers? The criticism levelled at DP is mild compared with some of that! Sport is about opinions - get real!
People who say they are only concerned about Warriors results and not Scotland clearly don't see any bigger picture.

Posted by jimbo on March 26, 2009 03:00 PM | Reply to this comment

Do you think that comparing who receives the worst criticism makes it ok?

In the end, DP has been an extremely loyal team player. You can see this on the pitch, the way he is always encouraging and backing team mates, always adding energy to a particular scenario. He is employed to play rugby and thats exactly what he does, he plays a sport he loves.

Over the last couple of seasons, however, there has been this constant echo in the distance and in the forefront reminding him that there is a contingent out there somewhere that really has it in for him. Why there is a need for this I have no idea. What has it achieved ? Simply nothing..

We as a team and as a country really have a negative attitude towards support, and its time to stop blaming it on bad team performance but to realise that its simply part of our nature. Its a cancer that spreads like wildfire and within a couple of bad comments we get page long feuds about whos a drama queen and who has more of a right to say what.

The people we talk about are, in the end, people. And they're all part of the team whom we all supposedly support. So, perhaps, for the last few games of the season we could find it somewhere within ourselves to stop these stupid pointless rants, much like this one, and start to sing from the same hymn sheet. Just get behind the 15 or so guys on the pitch, whoever they may be, and give them the encouragement they need or support they deserve.

Jimbo: spot on! Anybody can criticise and I wonder if the anti DP brigade can honestly claim that they feel their criticism has helped either the player or the team. Whoever is selected for Glasgow(and you can be sure that Lineen will not be influenced by adverse comments from certain elements) we should always back the match day 22, whoever they may be.

As far as the Munster game is concerned I shall be supporting my team (as usual) until I am hoarse! C'mon true fans - get to Firhill and support your team until you have no voice left!
