World Cup date for Richie Gray and Peter Horne

Peter Horne
Glasgow Warriors lock Richie Gray and new signing Peter Horne have been included in Scotland U20 coach Rob Moffat's 26-man squad for the IRB Junior World Championship in Japan.

Moffat gave his players every opportunity to stake a claim for a place in the final cut, making his selection just in time for the IRB deadline this afternoon following a full contact XV-a-side head-to-head amongst his players yesterday at Lasswade.

Moffat said: “Yesterday was a great opportunity for the players to play another match of high intensity rugby which helps the development of our game and was part of our programme for the World Cup. If we have got that right then this should be an even stronger squad than that of the 6 Nations.

“The World Cup is a fantastic environment to be in. Some of these players will go on to play professional rugby and this is the time for them to stand up and make that known. It’s up to them to make their mark on that stage and if these boys keep improving and developing then we can definitely look forward to the World Cup.

“One of the games in our pool is against England whom we lost in the 6 Nations. We also face Samoa and Japan and they are unknown quantities in some respects so we’re not getting carried away here. We know where we are and what we’ve got to do so importantly, with three weeks to go before we go to Japan, we continually develop our game.”

Seven new faces join the squad following the side’s most successful 6 Nations in history with Scotland under-19 captain, Grant Gilchrist earning a place alongside fellow forwards Robert Harley, Ryan Wilson and Grant Shiells, while Alex Dunbar, James Knight and Steven Aitken have been drafted into the backs.

Scotland have one final preparation fixture against Ireland under-20 on Sunday 24 May at Fort Matilda, Greenock (ko 2.30pm) before leaving for Japan the following Friday (29 May) where they will face Samoa (Friday 5 June), England (Tuesday 9 June) and hosts Japan (Saturday 13 June) in Pool B.

"Fort Matilda" .. don't you just love the name of that train station? Come on Warriors' fans, let's give these young guys support in this game before they go!

By my reckoning there are only 25 names listed here for a squad of 26 places. Has someone been accidentally ommited or have they still to pick player No 26? Robbie McGowan, Steven Wilson and Adam McKenzie who played in the 6 nations are all absent so I guess it will be one of them - Robbie McGowan since there appears to be only 1 stand off (Andrew White) in the squad?

The other question for me is - and it is asked in igorance not malice since I've never seen White play - how is Andrew White the only 10 in the squad since he has never started a game for Hawks, while Conor Davis, who has started every game for West he has been fit for, doesn't even get a mention?

Other than that, it is a good squad - 6 of the guys played last year at the world cup; and I would be surprised if at least 6 of these guys don't become full internationals in due time.

is it just me who has noticed that those who have been called up are primarily academy players at the expense of non academy players such as mcgowan and mckenzie...? is it the SRU justifying paying money on players they ear marked at 17 and who have to make the team as a justification? how can steven aitken be playing averagely in prem2 but be called up to represent his nation but conor davies, robbie mcgowan and others could slip by?not sure i follow the logic we see time and time again with academy players with the status being given priority over the club players. each area can only have 3 or 4 per age group in the academy and in caledonia it is as low as 2 per age group - mcculloch and aitken, previously bryce and mccall with jackson and mckenzie in pro ranks. what happens to all the other players in the area and how do they develop?!the sru has a fundamentally flawed approach to its age grade development
