Young Warriors getting the basics right

Euan Ferrie is one of the young players who have grabbed their opportunities
One of the features of Franco Smith's stewardship at Scotstoun has been the trust he's put in young players to play their part in Glasgow's URC and European campaigns.

Players like Alex Samuel, Max Williamson, Gregor Brown, Angus Fraser, Gregor Hiddleston and Euan Ferrie have regularly featured in Glasgow squads - and Ferrie, for one, thinks that this represents a positive development at Scotstoun.

Speaking to The Offside Line, Ferrie said: "He [Franco Smith] likes bringing talent through, which is pretty nice to see. Because that probably wasn't happening a lot with previous coaches."

Ferrie can play at lock or in the back row, meaning he faces no shortage of competition to get into squads more regularly. Asked what advice he had received from Smith on how to earn more game time, Ferrie said: "Just work on my basics, really. Be world-class at a couple of things and be all right at the rest - because if you are world-class at the basics you can pick up on the other stuff really easily.

"Just cementing the basics and learning off the older guys in the team as well - Richie Gray and Jack Dempsey - they will talk to you every day and tell you what you're doing wrong, what you're doing right. I'd like to be world-class in the lineout, but that's still to come."

Glasgow travel to Italy at the weekend to take on Zebre in a pre-season friendly. As URC champions, Warriors will have a target on their backs this season but Ferrie says they'll continue to focus on their game.

"For sure, teams will want to bring their A game to try and do the trumps over the champions," said Ferrie. "But we just want to take it game by game and see where we're at and focus on the things we've been working on at training."

The match in Italy will be Glasgow's first since their victory in the URC Final in Pretoria against the Bulls, when they fought back from a 13-0 deficit to triumph. Ferrie was one of three unused substitutes in that game and was also part of the squad that had lost narrowly to the same opponents on the same ground just a few weeks earlier. Ferrie believes that earlier trip played a vital role in preparing the team for what lay ahead.

"I think that did us the world of good, going there, seeing what it was like," he added. "Then we could just go out a few weeks after and put in a decent performance.

"The final was good fun - but it was hectic at the same time. I think the boys had slight belief going into the game, but when it hit half-time we knew that we were right in the game and we could go and take it to them."

Perhaps surprisingly, Ferrie wasn't selected for Scotland's tour of the Americas. It was, he said, "a slight disappointment".

"But I mean, if I'm chosen, I'm chosen. I can just come back here and work on getting better. There's really big competition in the back row and stuff right now, so I'm not too downhearted about it, but if the opportunity comes again, for sure. I want to be a Scotland player."
