Glasgow crash to Connacht

Dan Parks impressed when he came on in the second half but Glasgow had left themselves with too much to do
Glasgow crashed to a 30-19 defeat against Connacht at Hughenden tonight as the Irishmen completed their full house of wins over Scottish opposition, but they must be surprised at how easily Glasgow were dispatched.

Glasgow started well and put Connacht under pressure but Calvin Howarth was unable to convert that pressure into points with two penalty misses from easy kicks in front of goal. Joe Beardshaw finally put Glasgow on the scoresheet with an unconverted try in the corner.

Connacht's Mark McHugh took control of the game with some great kicking for position and at goal. Glasgow were also contributing to their own downfall as Moffat">Stuart Moffat tried to pass out of a tackle and saw Mark Walls intercept and run in for an easy Connacht try. More slack Glasgow play led to Connacht scores either side of half-time taking the Irishmen to a 30-5 lead.

The only bright spot for Glasgow fans (apart from Andy Nicol's singing in the beer tent) was the play of stand-off Dan Parks who replaced Calvin Howarth with Glasgow 25 points down. Parks managed to get Glasgow moving forward with his intelligent use of the ball leading to tries by Cammy Mather and Lee Harrison but the home side had left themselves with far too much to do.

"We knew how they would play; they don't play a lot of rugby, are very competent defensively and play positionally very well," said Glasgow coach, Hugh Campbell.

"We played most of the rugby but we lost the game in the second quarter when we kicked poorly and gave away too many penalties."

Glasgow will have to lift themselves for the challenge of Munster in the Celtic Cup clash at Hughenden next week.
