GB backing JP as skipper

Jon Petrie captained Scotland to victories over the Barbarians and Romania
Retired Scotland skipper Gordon Bulloch reckons Jon Petrie will face scrum-half Chris Cusiter in the battle to inherit his job.

Gordon announced his decision to quit the Test stage just seven appearances short of Gregor Townsend's record cap tally.

The ex-Glasgow player said in today's Sunday Mail: "Jonny probably has his nose in front but Chris is clearly a mature young man who's a natural leader."

JP all the way. No dissing the young fella, but why change a winning formula? JP has proven himself so far and deserves to continue in the role.

Chris will doubtlessly have ample opportunity to do the job in the future anyway.

I don't quite understand this article about "inheriting" GB's job ..JP is already the Scotland (and Glasgow) captain on merit. There really is no competition here ..

I have no probs with JP being Captain, however there are those who would argue if he is guaranteed his place when everyone is fit

i have to agree with gary if everyone was fit then i would have donnie, ally hogg and simpn taylor, with jason white in the second row, as great a player and leader as JP is i see him as 5th in the list, the back row is one place where we arent sort of good players

If there are too many players in the backrow, I'd consider playing JP or Hogg at 7 (with the other at 8, Taylor at 6, White & Hines at lock). Neither's first-choice position, but perhaps they offer a better all round game than Donnie.

However, what JP does have is excellentleadership, and good all round captaincy skills. He leads by example, speaks up, has experience and is respected, and handles the press and other peripheral tasks well. He has also more than demonstrated his commitment to the Scottish cause - turning down offers from elsewhere, and handling his intermittent selection with reasonable good grace.

In comparison: Hogg is too raw; Taylor too quiet and difficult with the press; White/Murray would struggle to starting/completing matches; Cusiter is untried, and will have to compete or interchange with Blair, Paterson seems to struggle to play well & kick & captain all at once; few of the others in the squad have the necessary experience and standing in the squad.
