Outstanding performances for the Warriors have brought John into the reckoning, but it looks like he'll be playing with Scotland U21 in next month's World Cup.
"With possible injury doubts in the back-row, it struck me that I needed to see the lad because I'd never worked with him," said Scotland coach Frank Hadden in The Herald. "I have no intention of taking him to South Africa. That's not to say we might not get a few more injuries and he is quite far up the pecking order. Ideally, we'd like him with 21s."
John, a member of the under-21 side that produced the best Scottish finish of sixth at last year's World Cup, was delighted to get his first involvement at a senior camp.
"Just to come along and get a few days experience has been great," he said. "I am committed to the 21s. It's my last year of involvement there and I want to finish on a high. Either way, it's going to be brilliant."
