Glasgow strengthen squad

James Eddie has signed a new contract with the Warriors
Glasgow Warriors have announced the signing of Border Reivers prop Ed Kalman and National Academy flanker Richie Vernon, as back-five player James Eddie and prop Eric Milligan re-sign with the pro-team.

Kalman and Vernon both joined the Reivers in the summer of 2006 but will head to the west at the end of the current season. Kalman, a former player with Whitecraigs, has played most of his adult rugby down south having studied at Cambridge University while Vernon is a High School of Dundee former pupil who has represented Scotland at U19, U21 and sevens levels.

Kalman said: “Obviously this is a great opportunity for me to play my rugby again in Glasgow. The Warriors are going from strength to strength and there will be huge challenges for me to gain my position in the front row. I’m sad to be leaving the Borders because I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my season here but I’ve come to the end of my contract and I have to look ahead to this positive new opportunity.”

Vernon, who has been well supported by the area institute network, said on making the transition from a national academy player to a full time professional: “I’m really excited about it and was very happy to receive the offer. I’ve spoken to Sean Lineen who’s positive and obviously doing a lot for the team. Glasgow are on the up so I’m looking forward to working hard with the Warriors next season. I hope I can be part of their continued improvement.”

Warriors coach Sean Lineen said: “Ed is a Whitecraigs lad so he’s returning to rugby in Glasgow. Within the squad we’ll be really competitive in the front row next season and Ed brings with him great technique and skill in the scrum.

“Richie is an exciting young player and a promising flanker. He will add to our current back row stable and brings great skills and real pace. He’s a tall, versatile player with a big future ahead of him,” he added.

On the two re-signing, Sean said: “Eric is a Glasgow lad through and through and this is recognition for his enthusiasm this season. He’s up to the right level now and will add to the competition in the front row with his dedication and hard work. James is developing well as an explosive back-five player and this is also a reward for his continued determination this year. I expect a lot from both players in the seasons ahead.”
All four players have signed two year deals with the Warriors.

Great news about Eric. Nice to see Glasgow are recognising the unsung heroes of the squad. Now lets try and retain Andy Wilson too.

Andy Wilson is hanging up his boots is he not?

Unsure but it would be a crying shame to see him leave. He really is invaluable to this club and I think we'll only realise how much if he departs.

Great to have Jedi and Eric signed on for two more years! Any word on other out-of-contract Warriors - Hefin, for example?

who else is out of contract at the end of the season?

If Collins and O'Young are definitely joining and Andy Wilson is leaving, I make that 30 on paper. Don't know who else is out of contract though or might be leaving. I suppose Sean Lineen can't sign up any of Reivers' 1st XV until a decision is reached on the Burgess and Garvie proposals.

I see that hefin, Graeme Morrison & Colin Gregor have signed again today, which is great news, however I as wondering if we are going to be giving Max Evans a contract for next season as I know the short term contract he is on expires at the end of this season. Also what about Colin Shaw? Is he going to be offred a new contract for next season (he is out of contract isn't he?) or are we likley to loose him which would be shame.
