Youngsters step up to the mark

Ryan Grant is competing for a front row berth
Sean Lineen says his young Warriors stepped up to the mark to give Glasgow one of their best wins in European competition.

Warriors notched 17 unanswered points to secure a 20-10 victory over two-time former European champions London Wasps at Firhill.

Sean told the Evening Times: I am proud of the guys. This result is right up there behind the victory over Toulouse in France a couple of years back, but the big thing we must take from it is that this is the standard we need to perform to every time.

“To have gone behind to an early try was a real test of the belief in the boys – but what a response. I thought that Ryan Wilson was probably the pick of the bunch for us.

“And it is so pleasing to see young guys like that stepping up to the mark and taking it on against one of the biggest names in European club rugby.

“But he was not alone. Ryan Grant is developing his technique all the time and, with him and Jon Welsh, we have real competition at loose head and that is key.

“On top of that, what do you say about the leadership of Al Kellock? We nicked a couple of their line-outs and really put pressure on their set-piece and that was really satisfying.

“The bottom line is this is one of our biggest wins in the European arena.”

Glasgow complete their European campaign against the Dragons this Sunday at Rodney Parade. Sean said: “The big thing for us is that we have to make sure we go to the Dragons and finish the job.

“This is the real acid test – can we perform to the same levels that had Wasps in meltdown at the end?

“But we knew that with this group of guys if we could get enough exper-ience back and the young guys were absorbing enough from these games against the best teams in Europe, we would see progress.

“What we have to do now is make sure we front up at Dragons and get the win that would give us real momentum going back into the Magners League.

“There is a lot of rugby to be played and if we can perform with consistency then you never know where that will take us.”

Dear Sean,

Remember our encounter in the carpark after I had missed a Warriors game due to its being rescheduled? Unfortunately I haven't been able to see this wonderful victory either, via any medium, but would like to congratulate you on your -- and the team's -- success. However, the win will only be truly significant if winning becomes the norm in future matches.
What I found very disappointing was the lack of any retrospective celebration on the BBC's Scottish sports slot on Monday. Why do we have to suffer such a myopic devotion to bloody footie?
Sandy.
