Young Warriors stepping up

Robert Harley has come a long way in his rookie season
The inclusion of two young Glasgow Warriors in Scotland's Six Nations training squad shows how quickly some things can move in sport.

Not so long ago Robert Harley and Jon Welsh were playing alongside each other (and Richie Gray) for West Of Scotland in Premier One.

Rob is in his first season as a pro but the 20-year-old has made Glasgow's number six jersey his own with a series of fine performances in the first half of the Magners League campaign. His form has also caught the eye of Andy Robinson - even if Rob couldn't quite believe it at first.

Rob told the Scotsman: "I got a text from the management saying I been selected for the Scotland camp. I was at home, and at first it was pretty much disbelief. Then I went to phone my parents. They were very proud. This is a long way past what I had imagined for my first season. I was kind of thinking that I might get a little bit of game time off the bench at Glasgow and that when the autumn Tests and Six Nations came along the Scotland players would go away and it might be a good opportunity to play for more games for Glasgow.

"But I have ended up playing a lot of important games, some great rugby. To top it all with a Scotland camp has been phenomenal. The nearest I have come to this (Scotland squad appearance] before is that I was lucky enough last year to be given a training session from the Scotland set-up. They did a session plan they were going to use with the international team with the academy players before they took it to the Scotland camp. It was very focused and very clear in the ideas of how the players should play, what they were going to do and what the goals of the session were.

"I'm not sure I can imagine fully what it is going to be like, but it will be incredible to be in the set up with the national team. I will just be trying to perform well and take in as much of it as I can."

For Glasgow prop Jon Welsh, who is only in his second season in Glasgow's starting XV, his inclusion brings him a step closer to his ambition to pull on Scotland's dark blue jersey. It's a deserved reward for Jon's hard work in returning to fitness after leg injuries and a broken jaw.

"This is an ambition I've always had since I started playing my rugby - I've been chasing that dream and now it's come a step closer," he said. "This shows that it's about keeping your head down and getting on with it. I had a big focus on the Munster and Wasps games and thought I did reasonably well. If you asked me what area I needed to improve on I'd still say every area, but that's just the way I look at it, to keep improving."

I forgot that Betsen was still playing...
Good luck to Harley!
