Brown's return is perfect timing

Gregor Brown is back in action after injury
Glasgow go into the second leg of the 1872 Cup with a 19-point advantage after last Sunday's 33-14 win at Hampden.

Glasgow went into that game missing several second-rows so Gregor Brown's return to action from a rib injury couldn't have been better timed.

Brown has been out of action since sustaining his injury against Fiji in Scotland's first Autumn Nations Series and with the Six Nations just around the corner he's like to put himself in the selection mix again.

"Yeah, hopefully," Brown told Scotland Rugby News on earning a Six Nations place. "I think the kind of player I am, I always just focus on improving. And I think that's something Franco (Smith) is really good at, just focusing on the individual and the team improvements week in, week out. If I can keep getting better and playing my best rugby, then hopefully I'll be in and around that squad. But again, I know that if I'm not, then I've probably just got more to work on."

On his injury, Brown added: "No, it was in the Fiji game, in the 10, 15 minutes I was on. But I sort of tried to push it during the week, but it was just too painful. Then when I got the scan it showed that it was probably a bit worse than we first thought, so probably best for long-term healing. Yeah, it was my top rib. The cartilage pulled away from my chest and just chipped a bit of the bone with it, so I kind of needed that to knit back over.

"The time frame was always seven to eight weeks, and this was week seven for me. My recovery from my rib was really smooth. It went really well, so I managed to tick off what I needed to, to get back today. I#d say I probably felt it in my lungs - there were a few long phases of play there. But other than that I felt pretty good. Obviously we picked up a couple of knocks in the second row and back row last week, so that probably meant that I came in early. But I felt pretty good out there. Just some match fitness, I'd say, was lacking."

Brown can perform at flanker or second row but he has a preference, despite being happy wherever he's asked to play.

"I'd definitely say that the back row is my primary position," Brown admitted. "But at the same time I don't think it changes much of my game being put in the second row. I think the way we play, it probably allows me to get more involved in the centre of the park. Though one added thing is probably just pushing harder at scrum-time. But once I look past that I honestly really don't care if it's the second row or back row. It means a lot to represent this club, so depending on where it is I don't really mind."

Warriors go into the game as favourites to retain the 1872 Cup with Edinburgh needing to overcome that tough 19-point deficit but Glasgow won't be complacent.

Brown added: "There's always little changes in our game plan, but our general game play stays the same most of the time, and that's just because we know that we can attack space wherever it is. Whatever the opposition, they can't cover the full field - I think that's something that we really pride ourselves on. I reckon that's one of the things we were talking about today, was that just when phases did get pretty deep and boys were feeling tired, our speed to set probably wasn't as good, which meant that there were other opportunities out there for us, we just couldn't take them.

"So that's probably a big work-on for next week, is that getting ourselves in the position to be able to take those opportunities is huge for us. We know Edinburgh are going to be a lot better after that. Being at home next week as well, they will be a lot better. So we'll probably need to up our game, and as I said before, it's one of our losses last year that we really want to get back for this season."
