A report by Stuart Bathgate in today's Scotsman claims that negotiations were completed last night, and an announcement will be made before this evening's match against The Borders.
Over the past month there has been a great deal of speculation surrounding a number of individuals, and it seems that all of the main contenders will be involved in the new set-up.
Hugh Campbell is expected to be named head coach. He will be assisted by Sean Lineen, who will take charge of the backs, and Shade Munro, who will be forwards coach. Richie Dixon could stay on in the short term to try to effect a smooth transition.
Campbell, who took charge of Scotland A this season after moving down from his involvement with the senior team, is a specialist in scrummaging. Whether there can be a clear division of responsibilities between himself and Munro, remains to be seen.
As the only backs coach in the set-up, Lineen would appear to have a fair amount of scope to do his own thing. He had been expected to move up to the professional ranks for some time, having been implicitly criticised by SRU director of rugby Jim Telfer for declining to step up from club rugby when a previous opportunity to coach at Glasgow arose.
Munro had been linked with a position at Glasgow, but the news of Campbell's involvement was initially thought to have lessened his chances of moving from the Hawks to the Warriors. Now, though, room has been found for Munro as the junior member of a triumvirate. It is understood that the Glasgow management in particular were keen to have both Lineen and Munro involved in the new set-up.
Dixon had been mentioned as a manager or "facilitator", a role similar to that of Ian Rankin at Edinburgh. Now, while he knows the Glasgow squad better than anyone, having been their full-time coach before, Dixon may be able to return more quickly to his Murrayfield post as head of coaching development.
Dixon, Jim Telfer and Glasgow chief executive David Jordan conducted the interviews this week, speaking to other club and pro team coaches as well as to those who got the jobs. The same panel appointed the last coaching team but will be hoping for greater success this time.
