Glasgow Warriors 33 - 3 Zebre Parma

United Rugby Championship match played at Scotstoun on Friday October 11th 2024 | No comments

Huw Jones went over for two tries
Glasgow Warriors scored five tries in a 33-3 win over Zebre Parma at Scotstoun this evening.

Johnny Matthews got things started when he touched from a lineout maul.

A great break from Huw Jones was carried on by George Horne who fed Kyle Rowe who was stopped inches from the line. The ball was recycled and Stafford McDowall put Jamie Dobie in near the right touchline.

Giacomo da Re replied for Zebre with a penalty before Glasgow pressure and patience was rewarded when Huw Jones went over to give the hosts a 21-3 lead at the interval.

The early minutes of the second half were a scrappy affair but nice work from George Horne at the base of a ruck found Scott Cummings. The big lock's perfectly timed pass opened the Zebra defence to put Huw Jones in at the posts for the bonus-point score.

On the hour mark Glasgow's rolling maul got into the action again but this time it was replacement hooker Grant Stewart who claimed the score.

With the win secured Warriors concentrated on keeping Zebre tryless but could have had a sixth try of their own but George Horne's scored was ruled out after review.

Speaking to Premier Sports after the match, Player of the Match Huw Jones said: "It's a bonus-point win. We stopped them scoring a try, which was an aim going into it.

"Happy with the result, we had some good periods and a whole lot of nothing at times. On the whole, pretty good.

"We've got two games coming up in South Africa coming up. Those are real big ones and then we'll think about what comes next after that."

Glasgow head coach Franco Smith was satisfied with his team's reaction to last week's win over Cardiff.

"Really happy with how the boys reacted from last week. Our defence was much more physical tonight, more connected," said Smith.

"In general, both sides of the ball were good tonight. The fact we've changed seven players, sometimes you've got to learn the lessons every week.

"Each one that gets an opportunity is making full use of it, so I'm happy about that.

"They definitely tried to close our space down. We've learned to adapt to various line speeds, and credit to them - they kept coming at us."
