Patrick Schickerling is set to become Warrior #363
Patrick Schickerling is set to make his first appearance, and become Warrior #363, after being named on the bench for Glasgow's URC meeting with Cardiff at the Arms Park this evening.

Zander Fagerson misses out through illness so the experienced Sam Talakai starts at tighthead but Glasgow head coach Franco Smith is looking forward to seeing what Schickerling can do.

"He's a dynamic ball-carrier, a good scrummager, he's worked hard," Smith told The Offside Line said of the Namibian, who joined Glasgow in the summer from Exeter.

"He was a loosehead, he's converting to tighthead, he's done an exceptional job. With both Zander and Fin ill this week it's an important opportunity for him. But from the start we got him involved with the idea of him progressing and growing in that role, and he's been fantastic all around the park - on the defensive side of things as well. He showed that in the two pre-season games."

Another Warrior getting an opportunity is winger Facundo Cordero. The talented Argentinian's time at Scotstoun has been hampered by injury and he'll make just his fifth appearance when Warriors take the field at the Arms Park.

"He must be the most unfortunate player up to now," said Smith. "There was a couple of times he was ready to play and he got injured in training on a Monday or Tuesday whilst he was selected.

"He's proven every time he has played for us that he's got special qualities - kicking off his left foot, good step, good counter-attacking qualities, defender. It's good for him to come and contribute. He's been waiting for his opportunity for so long, I hope that eagerness rubs off on all the players."

An ankle strain has ruled Kyle Steyn out of the trip to Wales, while his fellow-Scotland internationals Adam Hastings, George Horne and Rory Darge were concussed in last weekend's win over Benetton. "They're all fine," said Smith. "They'll be fine to train again on Monday. The return protocols are effective today and tomorrow, so they'll be fine. Even Kyle Steyn will surely recover in time to be selected before we go to South Africa, so just a short reset for them."

Turning to the illness issue, Smith continued: "At this part of the season there's a change in the weather conditions, so there were a couple of boys down during the week. Scott Cummings and Suz [Rory Sutherland] had a little bit of a problem like Rory Darge did last week, then we had a couple of the younger boys. From the senior squad the ones most affected were Zander and Fin Richardson. But both of them recovered and are back in the building today. They'll have a slow start to get back on their feet."
